The Southern Colorado Wool Pellet Project (SOCOWPP) has expanded rapidly over the 2025 season! In 2026, we look forward to making even more leaps in the research area of agricultural use of wool pellets.

The SOCOWPP received funding from the Colorado Water Conservation Board, Colorado State Conservation Board, and Colorado Association of Conservation Districts to purchase prototype wool pellet equipment to produce pellets that have the integrity and durability necessary to withstand agricultural application methods without compromising in-soil benefits (increasing water retention, organic matter, porosity, etc.). This equipment is expected to be ready for production by April 2026 to supply pellets for the 2026 field trials.

For the convenience of our sheep-growing and crop-producing partners, this equipment will also be mobile! The Center Conservation District recently purchased a curtain trailer to house the equipment, which will be generator-powered, so we can meet the sheep and crop producers where they are: in the field!

Potential field trials may expand beyond traditional crops to include: hay/forages, forestry, and range/pasturelands.
